| Vaccine |
A liquid preparation that contains a modified or killed
disease-causing agent |
| Vaccination |
Usually done by injection, it is the act of administering
the vaccine. |
| Immunity |
The effect of vaccination -- protecting your pet
from disease. The immune system of your pet will be tricked
into behaving as though a natural infection was occurring.
Antibodies are produced and these will intercept the disease-causing forms
of the virus or bacteria. |
There are several types of vaccines your pet may, could or should
receive. A breeding pet should be vaccinated prior to
being bred, and most pets will need to be vaccinated between 6 weeks and
6 months of age. In addition, annual boosters will have
to be given for a lifetime of protection.
Your pet may receive a "multivalent" type vaccine which will
immunize them from several diseases. Additionally, your pet
will need to be vaccinated annually against Rabies.
Cats and dogs vary somewhat in the vaccines they require and the time frame
they should receive these. The following is a recommended schedule of when
and what might need to be administered.
